Green Product Solutions from Star

With stricter codes and new standards calling for increased use of green building materials, as well as the AIA 2030 Challenge to create carbon neutral and net-zero energy buildings, Star has the products to help meet these needs.

Cool Colors for Metal Roofing

Star offers cool paint colors for all of our metal roof panels. When properly used, considering the environment and the slope of the roof, a cool roof can reduce energy consumption, providing significant cost savings while helping to mitigate urban heat islands.

This green building material offers Solar Reflectivity ratings and Solar Reflectance Index numbers to show the ability of our paint coatings to reflect and emit the sun’s energy. Solar Reflectivity (SR) or reflectance is the ability of a material to reflect solar energy from its surface back into the atmosphere. The SR value is a number from 0 to 1.0. A value of 0 indicates total absorbance and 1.0 indicates complete reflection. ENERGY STAR requires SR testing of both new and aged roof products. New products must have an SR value of 0.25 or higher for steep slope roofing (above 2:12) and an SR value of 0.65 or higher for low slope roofing (2:12 or less). Aged testing takes three years to complete, so not all products that meet the initial requirements are qualified.

The Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) is used to determine compliance with LEED requirements and is calculated according to ASTM E 1980 using values for reflectance and emissivity. To meet LEED requirements, a roofing material must have an SRI of 29 or higher for steep slope roofing and a value of 78 or higher for low slope roofing when evaluated under medium wind conditions.

Insulated Metal Panels

Insulated metal panels qualify as green building materials for a number of reasons. First, they have high R-values which provide superior thermal performance and reduced energy consumption. This allows for smaller greenhouse gas emissions and reduced energy costs for building owners. IMPs mitigate thermal drift, a degradation of R-values over time. Thermal drift is common when using un-faced polyisocyanurate rigid board insulation, which can lose up to 20 percent* of its R-value within two years. *Based on ASHRAE 90.1 recommended value (R=5.6 per inch) versus typical manufacturer’s claim (R=7 per inch). Insulated metal panels will keep a constant R-value for 20 or more years because of their impermeable metal skins.

Insulated metal panels qualify as continuous insulation (ci) where required by the International Energy Conservation
Code® (IECC) and ASHRAE 90.1. This allows for insulation to be free from significant thermal bridging. Because of their unique self-sealing side joints, Eco-ficient™ panels also function as an important part of a Continuous Air Barrier (CAB) system.

NuRoof® Retrofit Roofing System
Star’s NuRoof® retrofit roofing system, another green building material, uses light-gauge framing in combination with our metal roofing panels, which are coated in cool paint colors. When applied over an existing roof with a specified slope, a retrofit system improves the reflectivity and emissivity, provides water runoff solutions and increased the insulation in a roof. NuRoof® is ideally suited for a wide-range of substrates including steel, wood or concrete.

Photovoltaic Technology
Star Building Systems' metal roofs provide an ideal substrate for solar arrays and offer unique environmental and performance advantages. The flat surfaces incorporated into various roof panel profiles allows Star to support two PV offerings, including glass-based crystaline silicon and flexible thin film. Existing and new metal roofs make ideal substrates for PV systems since they can be installed without roof penetrations.
